a new season

25 Sep

The world around me is springing to life.  The streets are lined with blossoms and new green leaves.  Everywhere I see the possibilities of a new season.

And here I am renewed.  No longer beaten down, freed from those people who would suck the energy and light out of my life.  Now I have surrounded myself with people who lift my spirits.  People I can trust and enjoy, so that even the most difficult day is satisfying.

My winter is over and spring has begun.  I stand here ready for this new season and all its possibilities.  And with that in mind, it is time to pick up the pen.

new leaf

5 Jan

So a new year begins again.

A chance for a fresh start and endless possibilities.  There’s an energy to the beginning of a new year which encourages us to cleanse last year’s baggage and commit to making change in our life.  Turning over a new leaf.

Everyone is tinged with the aura of celebration and beginnings.

What are you going to do to make this year different from the last?  I am going to change the patterns in my life that hold me back.  How I will achieve this and measure it is another story.  First there are a lot of little milestones to be set, and habits to be changed.

They say it only takes a month to break a habit.  That has got to take some concerted effort.  And you need to know what you are changing that habit for, and what will replace that old behaviour.  Decide where you want to be, what is keeping you from being there and break that down into small singular parts which you can change one by one.

Focus.  Never give up.  Believe.

And so another unwritten year begins…

NaNo beginnings

3 Nov

So NaNoWriMo 2011 http://www.nanowrimo.org/ has officially begun.

All those hours spent daydreaming with a purpose has led to these days working to manifest the story.  There is an extra energy in the air and a sense of ‘needing’ to achieve your goal, there is also a sense that you may have been mad to commit to this when there’s, you know, life.

My first moment of NaNo madness came in my dreams after day one…  By the end of Day One I had written chapter one and 2,368 words; my imagination was spinning with where the story would go next and in this mind I fell asleep.  In my nightmare the words I had written went through the ‘official’ count and came back with only 892 words because all the words with three letters or less were discounted…

There are an awful lot of words with three letters or less…

And now the first day excitement is wearing down and it is time for the real test: can I change my habits for the month and sustain a daily writing regime?  I confess my daily word count is dipping after some long draining days at work… still 27 days to go and 4 weekends to make up some ground.

Surely this is where the ‘persistence’ mentality must kick in… https://emilyelst.wordpress.com/2011/08/24/living-in-flux/    ‘Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence…’

There are 27 more days of possibility to go.

If I truly believe I can do anything then I can surely do this!  I wish my fellow NaNoWriMos out there all the best of luck for their storytelling and their sanity in this month.

brainstorming for NaNoWriMo

11 Oct

So I have discovered NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) http://www.nanowrimo.org/ which in its essence is ‘thirty days and nights of literary abandon’.  So between the 1st and 30th of November participants try to write a 50,000 word fiction novel (roughly 1,667 words every day).  And, I figured why not?

This leaves me with a few weeks to settle on an idea for a story which I can visit every day in November with motivation.  Sounds easier in theory than it is in practice.

Do you go the Mark Twain route and ‘write what you know’; or on the premise of having no time for research do you go for wild fantasy where the world is tailored to your tale?

So many ideas, so little time…  And then, you start to think “it’s all been done before” and “how can this be different” and then you reach your worst fear: “what if I get halfway through and I don’t like it anymore?”  It is astonishing how much easier it is to entertain your doubts than it is to commit to creating.

The next couple of weeks I can luxuriate in all the possibilities.  The hundred and one tales I could possibly tell.  Then on the 1st of November, one way or another, I will put pen to paper (or finger to keystroke!) and one of those stories will begin.

And really, in the end, what have I got to lose except for the disappointment of not even trying.

mountain vistas

6 Oct

There’s nothing like a drive up the mountain to remind you of the magic and mystery in the world which you recognised as a child.

The winding green drive; bordered by tree-ferns and mountain ash.  And those tantalising peeks to the vast land that stretches out beyond the mountain range.  Even the light is different, charged with vitality and secret life.

I remember wonder.  I remember possibility…

imagine…

26 Sep

I want to imagine a world where the impossible is possible.

I want to believe that fantastical creatures can exist, that life can go on, and that I can make miracles happen with the power of my mind.  I want to live in a world where all the best stories are really true.  Where anything you can conceive can be real and we can overcome any and all odds.  I want magic happens to be reality and not just an old hippie’s bumper sticker.

Someday…

small moments

5 Sep

Some days just feel good.  There doesn’t have to be a big celebration, just a series of small moments which make you feel alive.

You wake up in the morning and the sun is shining and the sky is pale blue, there are new flowers and budding green growth everywhere you go, a song you really love plays on the radio, people smile wherever you go, you get some good news, you feel productive and it is effortless, someone you love gets good news, outside smells green and verdant, everything feels in its place and you walk tall.

I love the start of spring, and I love living life for all the little things which lift my spirit.  There is wonder in the steamy smell of eucalypt in the warm air after the rain.

Everything may turn on its head tomorrow, but for now, for today, for this moment it feels good and fresh and alive.

I am making a fresh commitment to creativity.  With the living buzz on the air, anything must be possible.

Water Crystals – the impact of music and intention on water and on us

20 Aug

These experiments by Masaru Emoto on the effects of music and words on water are truly amazing.  As human beings are made up of 70% water it makes sense that we would be dramatically effected as well, which explains some of those deep down reactions you have to the sounds around you and the words you listen to.

In this study water from around the world was slowly frozen to form crystals (each one unique of course like any snowflake); where the water was from would change the crystal structure.  When the water was clean and healthy it formed beautiful crystals, when it was polluted it was as if it couldn’t make any structure to the crystal at all.

Then they introduced music.  We all know music makes us feel and we naturally gravitate towards sounds that make us feel full and joyous and strong, and we flinch when music seems to grate against us.  Water does the same.  They exposed water samples to different music before crystallisation, the intricate forms of the crystals responded to the sounds; most were variations of delicate beauty, but a few like heavy metal were fractured.

As this continued they then considered positive and negative language, samples were left over night with words or phrases in various languages before being crystallised.  Positive sentiments like thanks and love formed elaborate and lovely crystals, while negative statements like killing and disgust so distorted the crystals they were like polluted water.

The next time you feel an instinctual reaction to sound or even to thought, remember you are mostly water and water has great sensitivity to the stimulus around it.

Aim to be positive, healthy and surrounded by that which gives you joy.  When this is not possible, then just give yourself as much stimuli as you can find to give you a clear and beautiful inner soul.  We do all need darkness to appreciate the light.  Focusing on things that make you feel more complete will simply help you see the world in full, and make your water sing.  Be intricate and whole, choose to think positively and enjoy beauty.

whisper of spring

2 Aug

The first signs of spring are here.  There is still a chill in the air but the sun is shining on the garden.  The first plum blossoms have unfurled and down the street a cloud of yellow wattle changes the scenery.

This is the season of new growth and blooming possibilities.  Winter is getting ready to hibernate while spring stretches her arms across the landscape.

I am looking forward to days in the garden, and all the life that is about to wake up around us.  Spring is just a whisper on the wind right now, a hint of what is just around the corner.  That is enough to make me feel renewed and hopeful.  I am waiting for the rest of the flowers to bud and open.  Waiting for it all to begin again and bloom again and the new discoveries each day can bring.

Inner light

14 Jul Inner Light

We all have light inside.  A brilliant, blinding and burning light.  Mostly we hide it away, bury it deep inside our flesh.  When we focus and let it loose, it shines through the cracks.  I want to find my light again.  That inner blaze I had almost fogotten.
